Off the grid
Built around two constraints
The land has no utility connection and the ground is solid basalt. The property was designed around those two constraints.
Power, water and waste are all handled on site: a solar array with battery storage, rainwater catchment with filtration, and a biogas digester.
Solar and storage
A ground-mounted array on the lava, with battery storage carrying the property overnight. There is no generator hum and no utility line.

Raised platforms
Each dome sits on posts above the lava rather than on a poured slab. The surface underneath stays intact, and the structures could be removed without leaving a foundation behind.
Water
Rainwater is caught and stored on the property, then drawn through filtration and an ultraviolet steriliser before it reaches a tap.
Waste
Waste is fed into a double-membrane biogas holder, where it breaks down and gives off gas that is piped back to the property as fuel.
Rainwater catchment and UV filtration
There is no mains water on this coast. Rain is collected and stored on the property, then drawn through sediment and carbon filtration and an ultraviolet steriliser before reaching a tap.
Biogas from waste
Waste goes into a double-membrane biogas holder on the lava beside the domes. It breaks down anaerobically and the gas is piped back to the property and burned as fuel.
Built on posts, removable without leaving a foundation.
Kīlauea created this ground recently and remains active. The domes sit on the flow rather than altering it.
